The Maple Chair Leg
1974Roseville, Alabama. Age nine. The dining chair had leaned for weeks, a slow surrender to gravity. My father handed me a tube of hide glue, a scrap of canvas, and a wooden clamp. "Make it true," he said. I sanded the split till it fit like teeth. Wrapped the canvas. Tightened the clamp. Waited twenty-four hours. When I released it, the chair stood straight. My father's nod was louder than any applause.
